About jincup
The jincup, a signature piece by wood artist Akihiro Jin, is handcrafted one by one by carving natural wood. Its rugged silhouette is a result of the unique characteristics of each piece of wood. Since the carving technique varies slightly depending on the wood used, each piece is one-of-a-kind—no two are exactly alike. To coincide with the launch of “jincup ceramics”—a new collaboration between “Akihiro Woodworks” and “ONE KILN”—we are offering a limited-quantity run of “jincup cultivate” on this website. Finished using the “slip casting” technique, these cups are made by adjusting the clay to a thick, viscous slurry, pouring it into a mold, and then pouring off the excess once it reaches the desired thickness. The thickness of the vessel and the patterns left on the interior vary depending on how the slurry is cut off and the timing of the waiting period. It is a fascinating technique that shapes each piece into a unique individual with its own subtle, natural character. “jincup cultivate” is crafted in full adherence to the jincup design philosophy of “giving form to the formless.”
About Akihiro Woodworks
A woodworking collective based in Kagoshima.
We contribute to society by skillfully crafting forms from wood harvested from nearby mountains and creating value through our work.
We continue to expand the scope of our activities, ranging from the development of original products such as “jincup,” furniture making, and interior design for stores and homes, to the creation of sculptures and installations.
If we make good products, more people will use them. Continuing to do so—we believe that is the only thing we can do to help build a better future. Let’s embark on a journey to discover the standards of what makes a good product—for ourselves, and for you.
